General presentation:

 

Five Special Forums will be held on the afternoon of 27 August, addressing the transformation of textile and fashion systems in the era of digitalization, Human-Centric innovation, and interdisciplinary convergence. The forums will cover key domains including Digital Product Passports in textile supply chains, intelligent manufacturing systems, textile safety and health, interdisciplinary creative economy, and sport bioengineering. Beyond traditional academic sessions focused on specific scientific advances, the TBIS2026 Special Forums are designed as integrative platforms bringing together academic researchers and industrial professionals to explore application-driven innovations. Through a combination of expert presentations and round-table discussions, these forums aim to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue, align technological developments with real-world challenges, and articulate a shared vision for the future of intelligent, sustainable, and human-oriented textile ecosystems.

 

Special Forum 1 – Digital Product Passport for Traceability and Circular Textile Systems

Objective: To explore how digital infrastructures, including Digital Product Passports (DPP), enable traceability, transparency, and circularity across textile supply chains.

 

Core Research Questions:

 

1) How to implement DPP in real textile supply chains by 2027?

2) What are the first actionable steps for companies to implement DPP in the next 12–24 months?

3) How to ensure interoperability across global value chains?

Round Table on Industrial challenges & solutions (30 mins):

 

Theme: From Regulation to Implementation: Making DPP Operational in Textile Industry

 

Guiding Questions:

 

1) What are the main barriers to industrial deployment of DPP?

2) How to balance data transparency and data sovereignty?

3) What role for European standards and policies?

 

Special Forum 2 – AI Adoption and Human-Centered Transformation in Textile Manufacturing

(Organizer: X.Zeng)

Objective: Artificial Intelligence is increasingly recognized as a strategic enabler for the transformation of manufacturing systems. However, the industrial value of AI depends not only on technological advances but also on the capacity of companies to successfully integrate AI into production processes, workforce practices, and organizational structures. This forum aims to explore practical pathways for deploying AI technologies in textile and apparel manufacturing while maintaining a strong    human-centered perspective. Special attention will be given to productivity improvement, production adaptability, quality enhancement, workforce engagement, and      sustainable industrial competitiveness. The forum will bring together researchers, technology providers, industrial practitioners, and policy stakeholders to discuss how    AI can move beyond pilot projects and become a scalable driver of industrial value creation within European textile ecosystems.

 

Core Research Questions:

 

1) How can AI create tangible value in textile manufacturing operations?

2) What are the key barriers and success factors for large-scale AI deployment in industry?

3) How can Europe accelerate AI adoption while ensuring human-centered and competitive manufacturing systems?

    • “Intelligent Robots and Human-Robot Cooperation in manufacturing” (Sihai Qiu, Peking University Shenzhen Institute)
    • “Intelligent systems engineering for Industry5.0” (Sidharta Gautama, Ghent University)

 

Round Table on Industrial challenges & solutions (30 mins):

 

Theme: Deploying AI in Textile Manufacturing: From Pilot Projects to Industrial Value Creation

 

Guiding Questions:

 

1) Which AI applications are currently creating the greatest value in textile manufacturing?

2) What are the main barriers preventing AI projects from moving from pilots to large-scale industrial

    deployment?

3) How can textile SMEs successfully adopt AI with limited resources and expertise? 

4) How should human expertise and AI systems collaborate to improve both productivity and workforce well-

    being?

5) What actions are needed to strengthen European competitiveness and technological sovereignty in AI-driven

    manufacturing?

Special Forum 3 – Human-Centered Textile Safety Systems: Protection, Health and Methodological Innovation

     (Organizer: Guowen Song)

Objective: This forum advances the design, evaluation, and deployment of textile-based safety and protective systems through the integration of materials innovation, human factors, and rigorous methodology. It focuses on the protection and health challenges now confronting firefighters and first responders — not only thermal and mechanical threats, but the toxic chemical exposures that increasingly define their long-term health risk: combustion smoke chemicals, contaminated and off-gassing PPE, wildfire and WUI smoke, and the emerging hazards of lithium-ion battery fires. By bringing together materials scientists, human-factors researchers, and methodologists, the forum explores how human-centered design and digital tools — wearable sensing, simulation, and digital twins — can deliver high-performance, evidence-based, and inclusive protective solutions across occupational and health-related domains.

 

Core Research Questions:

 

1) How should protective textile systems be designed for emerging and compound hazards — wildfire/WUI smoke, lithium-ion battery fires, and persistent chemical contamination?

2) How can human factors — ergonomics, physiology, perception, and fit across diverse body types — be integrated into protective system design?

3) How can exposure, contamination, and protective performance be evaluated together under realistic, multi-hazard conditions?

4) How can digital tools — wearable sensing, simulation, and digital twins — enhance design, validation, and real-time risk monitoring?

 

Presentations (20 mins each):

    • “Designing High-Performance Protective Textile Systems: Integrating Materials, Function and Human Factors” (Guowen Song, lowa State University, USA  )
    • “Real-Time Monitoring of Thermophysiological Strain in Protective Clothing Using Textile-Integrated Sensors” (Simon Annaheim, EMPA, Switzerland)
    • “From Laboratory Innovation to Field Deployment: Building the Innovation Ecosystem for Next-Generation Protective Textile Systems” (Stephan Vérin, EuraMaterials Cluster)

 

Round Table on Industrial challenges & solutions (30 minutes):

 

Theme: Toward Reliable, Human-Centered, and Intelligent Protective Systems

 

Guiding Questions:

 

1) Where do current protective systems fall short — in protection, comfort and usability, and contamination control?

2) How well do today's testing and certification methods represent real, multi-hazard field conditions, and where are the gaps?

3) How can digital tools (wearable sensing, simulation, digital twins) improve reliability and predictive evaluation?

4) What does end-user adoption require — including inclusive fit across diverse populations — and integration into operational workflows?

 

 

Special Forum 4 – From Creative Design to Global Impact: Innovation Ecosystems for the Future Textile Industry

     (Organizer: Mingjing Lin)

Objective:  To explore how creative design, scientific innovation, and entrepreneurial ecosystems can jointly shape the future of the textile industry. The forum will examine how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, advanced materials, sustainability-driven solutions, and Industry 5.0 concepts, are transforming the innovation process from creative exploration to industrial deployment and global market impact. Particular attention will be given to innovation ecosystems, commercialization pathways, and Europe–Asia partnerships that can accelerate the translation of ideas into sustainable economic and societal value.

 

Core Research Questions:

 

1) How can creative design and emerging technologies generate new textile products, services, and user experiences?

2) How can textile innovations be transformed into sustainable industrial and commercial opportunities? 

3) How can Europe and Asia strengthen innovation ecosystems to accelerate entrepreneurship, investment, and market development?

    • “Building Industrial Success from Innovation: Lessons from Global Investment Projects in North of France” (Guillaume Jinkoji, Nord France Invest)
    • “From Innovation to Market Impact: Building Europe–Asia Partnerships for the Future Textile Industry” (Hao Shi, Moody’s Investors Service)

 

Round Table on Industrial challenges & solutions  (30 mins):

 

Theme: Building Textile Innovation Ecosystems: From Creative Design to Global Impact

 

Guiding Questions:

 

1) How are AI, sustainability, advanced materials, and Industry 5.0 reshaping textile innovation and design?

2) What are the key success factors for transforming creative ideas into successful products, services, and businesses?

3) How can designers, researchers, industry, startups, and investors collaborate more effectively to accelerate innovation? 

4) What new opportunities are emerging for Europe–Asia cooperation in textile innovation and entrepreneurship?

5) What innovation and business models are most likely to shape the textile industry of the next decade?

 

Special Forum 5 – Textile Bioengineering for Sports Performance

Objective: To investigate how textile-based systems contribute to human performance, physiological regulation, and functional optimization in sports and physical activities. The forum aims to integrate textile engineering, sports science, biomechanics, and intelligent technologies to enable high-performance, adaptive, and personalized solutions

 

Core Research Questions:

 

1) How can textile systems enhance athletic performance and physiological efficiency?

2) How to model and optimize human–textile–environment interactions in sports contexts?

3) How can wearable sensing and smart textiles support real-time monitoring and feedback?

4) How to design personalized and adaptive textile systems for athletes and users?

5) How to translate elite sports innovation into broader applications (rehabilitation, daily activity)?

2) What are the key technological bottlenecks in smart sports textiles?

3) How to ensure reliability and validity of wearable sensing systems?

4) What is the role of AI in performance optimization and coaching?
